Ferenc Erkel Memorial House
Ferenc Erkel, composer of the Hungarian National Anthem and founder of Hungarian national opera, was born here on November 7, 1810. The rich collection of objects and documents includes many personal relics of the composer. Erkel was also an outstanding chess player, and his memory is honored by the annual chess memorial tournament held in Gyula. Visitors are welcomed by interactive terminals presenting the national anthems of Europe, followed by the Hall of European Music. In the interactive corner of the 19th-century classroom, guests can solve period-style tasks, while the “Erkel Memorial Room” displays the composer’s personal belongings. The bedroom, salon, and traditional kitchen recreate the atmosphere of the Erkel family home.
